COLIFICHET!

July 29, 2026 (Wed) - August 2, 2026 (Sun)

12:00 - 18:00

Open until 9 PM on Friday / until 5 PM on the last day

This will be the first solo exhibition in Tokyo in two years, featuring paper dolls by Runa Ota.

*English below*

COLIFICHET likely derives from the Latin words colla (glue) and figo (to join), and in French it means "cluttered ornaments" or "trinkets of little value." It was apparently often used in the past for women's hair ornaments or extra ornaments in architecture. "Colfichet!"—I love the sound of it.

I created about 50 paper dolls for this exhibition while imagining a space like a backstage corridor filled from floor to ceiling with frilly costumes, counterfeit jewels, mysterious amulets, and tiny trinkets. Even though they're called "human" dolls, there are all sorts of them—animals, plant-like figures, and more. Some have scales, wings, or horns; some are smiling gently, others look like they're plotting something mischievous. I don't want you to say you can't find your favorite!

They might be bulkier and harder to store than paintings, but because you can touch, play with, and change their shape, I think you'll enjoy a different kind of interaction with them than with typical works of art.

In addition, there will be an exhibition of illustrations, sales of newly created goods using risograph printing, and! During the exhibition period, we're also planning an "A5/B6 Pencil Portrait Drawing Session! (Donation-based or barter system)."

Colifichet probably derives from the Latin words colla (glue) and figo (to join), and it's a French uncommon (old) word meaning “clumsy little ornament”. It's said to have once been used to describe superfluous dress details or cluttered architecture. I like the sounds.

I created around 50 mobile paper puppets for this exhibition; humanoid, animaloid, botanical, horns, feathers, scales, with a sweet smile or mischievous...
Paper puppets are bulkier and harder to store than usual paintings, but you can interact with; touch, play, reshape, and maybe enjoy a different way to live with an artwork!

There will also be new goodies made by risograph and illustrations, and! I'm also planning an ‘A5-sized B6 pencil portrait session! (free donation system)’ during the exhibition. Details coming soon, DM if you want to book a slot already!
See you!

Profile: Luna Ota
Born in Fukuoka, raised in Brussels. Completed a Master's program in Printmaking at the Urbino University of Art in 2021. Participated in the Koganecho AIR program from 2022 to 2024.
Currently working primarily on portraits in Zushi.
After several years of studying and gaining experience in painting, sculpture, and etching, I realized I was returning to drawing (closer to "drawing" in Japanese). This ranges from daily sketches to drawings on paper, wood, and unconventional supports using thick oil pastels, pens, watercolors, and pencils, as well as murals, portraits, performative live painting, and independent publishing.
