Last year's solo exhibition by Honami Haneda was a great success, but this time, the exhibition will be even more powerful, not only featuring new works, but also including a live performance using "ngoni," a musical instrument made from recycled ocean waste.
Furthermore, thanks to the high praise we received for our publicity efforts at her previous solo exhibition, SUT has been given the opportunity to be involved in the production of her first art book, which is one of Ms. Haneda's major goals. Her dream of publishing an art book at the age of 30, and her desire to widely convey the ocean that she loves and the challenges faced by the creatures that live there—these two aspirations will be poured into this art book. And in order to inform more people, we have decided to launch a crowdfunding project. This solo exhibition at SUT GALLERY will be the opening of the "Honami Haneda Dream Project."

My goal at age 20: "A solo exhibition at age 25, and an art book at age 30."

Holding a solo exhibition at the age of 25 seemed like an impossible goal for me back then, when I was still a student at a vocational school. Publishing an art book at the age of 30 seemed like a distant dream. However, when I was able to hold a solo exhibition at the age of 25, supported by the people who encouraged me, I realized that instead of wishing for a miracle, I could achieve the goals I set for myself if I worked hard and kept striving.

And as I pursued my second goal, "to publish an art book by the age of 30," I came to realize once again that while it is my goal, it's not something I can achieve on my own. More than simply creating an art book, I strongly want it to be an art book that expresses my gratitude to the people who have supported me so far, and an art book that will benefit the creatures and the ocean that I love.

I want to convey my feelings to as many people as possible.

I want to get my art book to as many people as possible and let them know about my work and thoughts as an aquatic life artist. That's why I've decided to use crowdfunding to promote it widely. I'm working with the design department at SUT GALLERY to create a wonderful design and specifications that will resonate with the hearts of those who hold it in their hands. This solo exhibition at SUT GALLERY is also the start of this crowdfunding campaign. I want this exhibition and art book to be a solid record of Honami Haneda, a 30-year-old who is still evolving.

Ngoni LIVE

Using buoys made from marine debris,
The one and only instrument in the world: 'Ngoni'

Performed by: Keisuke Itakura
2022.9.23 Fri. 19:00-20:00

The ngoni, a stringed instrument that is a traditional Malian guitar, is a popular instrument in West Africa. Typically, its body is made of wood and covered with goatskin. Said to be a root of the banjo, it produces a light, harp-like sound. It is played by West African storytellers called "griots" during celebrations and special occasions, often accompanied by traditional songs called "fasa." There, the griots, as musicians playing the ngoni and other instruments, recount the history of their people, including wars, and their improvisational music and poetry also served as a means of conveying news. Initially, the ngoni was played with only six strings, but later the number of strings increased to 8 to 18 to expand its range. Currently, with improved tuning, it is used not only in traditional performances but also as a popular instrument in mainstream music.

Keisuke Itakura, creator of "Ngoni" / Percussionist

He is a member of "LaSenas," a group that performs improvisational music using hand signs, and plays percussion and other instruments he makes himself. While active in various genres such as jazz, pop, and folk music, he also makes and sells instruments such as cymbals and ngoni. In addition to making instruments, he is also focusing on upcycled instruments, such as the "Key Chime" cluster chimes made from recycled keys, instruments made from plastic bottle caps, and the "ngoni" made from recycled ocean waste.

You can watch a video of Ngoni performing here.

Honami Haneda / Aquatic life painter

Using aquatic creatures as a theme, the artist depicts the resilience and transience of life. The flowing lines created by carving layers of paint express "the breath felt from that life." While creating pen drawings, the artist felt uneasy about the continuous generation of waste, and turned to Japanese painting pigments such as rocks, soil, and seashells, leading to the current mixed-media works. The artist also dedicates energy to upcycling art, breathing new life into discarded buoys (floats) and giving them a new life.
